Immigration raids Tamil-daily Makkal Osai, two arrested

Malaysiakini

A team believed to be from the Immigration Department today raided Tamil-daily Makkal Osai's office located at Jalan Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur, and arrested two foreign nationals.
When contacted, Makkal Osai managing director Sunther Subramaniam confirmed the raid and arrests.
"They raided our office and detained two people.
"One is a Sri Lankan who holds a UN refugee card, and the other is an Indian national.
"The Indian national is married to a Malaysian, and her husband passed away a few years back," Sunther told Malaysiakini.
"We are in cooperation with Immigration officials to resolve the matter," he added.
Sunther, however, claimed that the duo was not part of the Tamil-daily's editorial team.
"They are not Makkal Osai staff. They are the staff of a related company," he said.
Quizzed on reasons behind the raid, Sunther only said that the Immigration Department officers were carrying out their duties to act on a complaint lodged by an undisclosed party.
Malaysiakini has contacted the Immigration Department for a statement on the matter. - Mkini
