New police oversight body to be set up, says minister

KUALA LUMPUR: A bill on setting up an Independent Police Conduct Commission (IPCC) is to be tabled at the Dewan Rakyat next week, home minister Hamzah Zainudin said today.
The new police oversight body replaces the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) which was proposed under the previous Pakatan Harapan administration.
Hamzah said last week that a new bill to set up an independent police oversight commission would be presented to the Dewan Rakyat after Cabinet agreement.
He said today the IPCC Bill will be tabled on Aug 26.
The bill calls for the commission to be placed directly under the home ministry so that the minister would be able to monitor its progress. The previous proposal for the IPCMC had called for it to be placed under the legal affairs division.
“God willing, we will include all the improvements. The commission will be set up so strict action can be taken against police officers who abuse their powers,” he told a press conference this evening.
He gave details of the bill after he had been asked to comment about various reports of police involved in crimes and abusing their power, as seen in recent allegations of police taking bribes to cover up illegal gambling activities in Sungai Buloh.
On Thursday, three opposition MPs raised an outcry after Hamzah said a task force had been set up to study the bill on the IPCMC.
The bill was to have been debated in March, after being postponed twice. The proposed new commission would replace the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission to improve transparency and accountability of the police force. - FMT
