Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has been summoned to the Bukit Aman federal police headquarters tomorrow to give his statement over the list of MPs who purportedly support him to become prime minister.
According to a statement by Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Huzir Mohamed, the police have so far received a total of 113 reports over the matter.
"The police are still conducting an investigation over the claim, which had gone viral on social media.
"And thus, Anwar has been asked to present himself at the office of the Classified Investigation Unit, CID Bukit Aman on Oct 16 to give his statement," Huzir said.
According to the police commissioner, the investigation is being carried out under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Section 505(b) of the Penal Code stipulates about the "spread of rumours that can cause fear and alarm to the public, which could induce a person to commit an offence against the state or to public peace", while the communication law provision stipulates about improper use of network facilities.
Huzir also urges the public to refrain from making or distributing any statement that can disturb peace and harmony.
The PKR president had announced late last month that he had secured enough numbers in the Dewan Rakyat to form a new government.
He had met the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Tuesday over the matter, where Anwar was said to have presented the King the number of MPs he claimed to be in support of him.
Prior to his audience with the King, a list of lawmakers allegedly in support of the Port Dickson MP had started circulating online.
Several of the MPs listed, however, had since denied that they were part of the group and lodged police reports. - Mkini
