KLANG: Residents of the Prima Bayu Apartments here want the authorities to screen them and 30 foreigners living there for Covid-19, says residents' association president P. Mageswarren.
He said that he has asked the Klang health department to test the 30 Nepalis quarantined there as well as all the other residents.
He said the request was made during a Zoom meeting on Tuesday (Oct 20) with the Klang district health office, which was also attended by Klang MP Charles Santiago.
“We have also asked for the other residents to be tested at a reduced cost of RM50 each as the amount offered to us of RM150 per person is too costly for most residents here," added Mageswarren.
Mageswarren also said that the apartment blocks were being sanitised daily and the residents from more than 600 households living there shared the cost.
The 30 men are all employees of a factory in Port Klang and were housemates and colleagues of 21 other Nepalis who have since tested positive for Covid-19.
Their employer had rented seven units in the apartments’ two blocks to house their 50-odd Nepali workers.
The home owners and residents at the Prima Bayu Apartments are mostly from the M40 category.
Mageswarren also said about a dozen frightened home owners have also shifted elsewhere temporarily over the weekend.
"Once they heard that 21 of their neighbours had tested positive, they became jittery and left," he added.
Meanwhile, Santiago said he will discuss the matter with the Health and Finance ministries to secure a more affordable Covid-19 testing rate for the residents.
“The district health officers will also be coming to Prima Bayu Apartments to conduct a risk management exercise to ascertain the number of residents that must be tested," he added.
As for the Nepalis, Santiago said they were outsourced to the factory by a company which has been directed by the authorities to pay for the 30 men to be tested again. - Star
