FB post unrelated to Malaysia, I respect our rulers, says Liu

Ronnie Liu says he posted a photo of the Thai demonstrations two weeks ago, before the controversy over the government’s proposal to declare a state of emergency.

PETALING JAYA: DAP leader and Sungai Pelek assemblyman Ronnie Liu has clarified that a post on his Facebook page was unrelated to the current political situation in Malaysia, after he was arrested for sedition earlier today.

Liu has since been released on police bail and told FMT he has not been informed of any charges yet.

“My FB posting was up two weeks ago and it has nothing to do with the current situation in Malaysia. The recent controversy on the emergency issue was only raised in the media last Sunday.

“As a responsible politician, I always uphold the principle of the constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy. I always respect the institution of the Malay rulers.”

Liu was detained by Bukit Aman officers after arriving at the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters for questioning this morning.

He is being investigated over his Facebook post, said to be seditious towards the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. The post contained a photo of demonstrations in Thailand with the caption, “Now in Bangkok. They are saying no to the King”.

Bukit Aman CID chief Huzir Mohamed said the investigations were being conducted under Section 4 (1) of the Sedition Act for inciting hate against a ruler or a government.

He also said investigations were being carried out under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities. - FMT
