An animated short film by Macgres Sawet and Nabiatul Dania Zulfiqa Mohd Zulfadhli - two 11-year-olds from rural Sarawak - has won an international film award.
The film, entitled “B.B - Batuh Bijanji”, recently bagged the “Best Film by Popular Jury” prize in the primary school category at the Alvorada International School Film Festival (Fecea) in Brazil.
The film was also shortlisted for the “Best Animation” award for the primary school category but did not win. The film festival celebrates films made by school and university students.
Batuh bijanji means promise stones in the Bidayuh Serian dialect.
Macgres and Nabiatul are Standard Five pupils at SK Temong in Serian.
Made in 2019, their five-and-a-half-minute short film tells the story of an enduring friendship between two girls even as tragedy befalls one of them.
The duo was credited for acting, voicing, script-writing, animating, and shooting the film.
They were assisted by teachers Wan Zulfadli Ad-Dinnie Wan Azmi and Mohd Reduan Patah as well as the former’s production house D-Mulsion Production.
Speaking to The Borneo Post, Wan Zulfadli said his pupils produced the film in 10 days using the rotoscoping animation technique where animators trace over live-action footage.
The film project began when Macgres and Nabiatul attended a two-day digital storytelling animation workshop in Kuching that was organised by the Sarawak government.
They completed the film in the subsequent eight days upon returning to school.
The Fecea awards ceremony was conducted on Nov 28 through Google Meet, and trophies will be posted to all winners. - Mkini
