PARLIAMENT | Sabah deputy chief minister Bung Moktar Radin has offered to be the first person to take the Covid-19 vaccine in the country, to test whether it is safe.
He also urged the government to hasten the procurement of vaccines so that it can be distributed to the people.
"I volunteer to be the first person (in the country) for this vaccine to be tested on.
"I am not afraid, because I want to be healthy. The generals must go first.
"I’ll tell people out there not to worry. The producers guarantee that these are genuine and not counterfeit vaccines; they’re not fake.
"With these vaccines, we can free our community from getting Covid-19 infection," he said in the Dewan Rakyat.
Bung (BN-Kinabatangan) said this in response to Wong Ling Biu's (Harapan-Sarikei) question on who the vaccines would be tested on in Malaysia.
Wong had previously been infected with Covid-19 during the first wave.
Bung, in his debate for the Health Ministry's allocations under Budget 2021, also raised the issue allocations to improve healthcare facilities in Sabah, including the Kinabatangan Hospital in his constituency.
The government has signed agreements with US drugmaker Pfizer and the Covax facility to acquire vaccines.
This will be enough to vaccinate 30 percent of the population, with priority given to frontliners and high-risk groups.
Ultimately the government plans to vaccinate 70 percent of the population to achieve herd immunity. - Mkini
