KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians should continue to be cautious and practise safety measures, even with the relaxation of restrictive rules and inter-state and -district travel prohibitions.
Alliance for Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said Malaysians must continue to exercise utmost precautions, like wearing masks, avoiding crowded places, and practicing physical distancing.
"It is with a palpable sigh of relief that news has been received about relaxing the restrictive rules imposed several months ago under the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO).
"These include free movement between states except for states and districts still considered to be of high risk, mainly Kuala Lumpur, parts of Selangor and Sabah, as well as no restrictions on the number of passengers in a car, depending on its carrying capacity.
"This is especially welcome news for holiday travellers and those celebrating Christmas," he said in a statement today.
Lam Thye said while the recent announcement will certainly boost the economy and throw a lifeline to SMEs and family-owned enterprises, it does not mean that Malaysians can let their guards down.
"While we must strike a balance between lives and livelihoods, the new opportunities that we enjoy are also new chances for the enemy to strike again.
"Therefore, there can be no compromises where these measures are concerned.
"The war against Covid-19 is not yet over, and we must never let our guard down."
Meanwhile, on another matter, Lee said it is time for the authorities to reconsider the Work From Home (WHF) order.
"While working from home has provided some relief, there is no substitute for an office environment where the necessary facilities are available, and there are opportunities for interaction among staff.
"Hence, it is timely to think of reopening office doors to allow workers in some establishments to go back to more conducive environments." - NST
