Localised emergencies have been declared in Gerik, Perak and Bugaya, Sabah, which were facing upcoming by-elections to prevent the risk of Covid-19 transmission.
Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah had assented to the suggestion of a localised emergency under the provisions of Article 150 (1) of the Federal Constitution, which is allowed if the Agong is satisfied that a state of emergency can be declared in an area or the whole of Malaysia.
"In making the recommendation to the Agong on Dec 4, the cabinet was mindful about concerns over holding the by-elections in Gerik and Bugaya while the Covid-19 pandemic was still being transmitted."
Previously on Nov 27, the Election Commission (EC) announced that the by-elections for the Gerik parliamentary seat and Bugaya state seat would be held simultaneously on Jan 16, 2021.
Given the spread of Covid-19 in the aftermath of the Sabah state election in September, it was decided that for public safety reasons, it was best not to hold the by-elections now, said Muhyiddin.
On Nov 18, the Agong made a proclamation of emergency for Batu Sapi, which in turn cancelled the by-election set for Dec 5. - Mkini
