Selangor police have confirmed receiving a report from glove maker Top Glove regarding allegations of abuse by an enforcement officer on duty around its quarantine facilities in Meru, Klang, that is currently under lockdown.
Selangor Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief Muhamad Yazid Muhammad Yew (above) said investigations are ongoing under Section 324 of the Penal Code.
"We can confirm that we have received a police report from Top Glove in relation to allegations of abuse by an enforcement officer at the site.
"The matter is still being investigated," said Yazid during a press conference at the Selangor police contingent headquarters this evening.
A video that went viral earlier this week showed a man, purportedly a foreign worker at a Top Glove factory, being abused by what appeared to be a member of the security forces, prompting outrage and calls for an investigation.
The video was one of two linked on a Facebook account showing a foreign man's picture with what was purportedly a Top Glove worker identity card.
In the video, a man is seen rolling about on grass while another individual is standing over him and wielding what appears to be a whip. The latter appears to be in military fatigues, while both men are wearing masks.
A source familiar with the situation previously told Malaysiakini that workers are fearful but "want the videos to go public and for the abuse to stop".
Meanwhile, Yazid also commented on a separate video reported by China Press that showed a group of men climbing a fence believed to be located near their hostel located in the same area.
"It is not an issue because they did not leave the (enhanced movement control order) area.
"The place they wanted to go to was a house turned into a sundry shop," said Yazid, adding that the fence was found to be a shortcut used by the workers.
He said the Klang local authorities have since moved to shut down operations at the house.
Overall, he said there were 2,184 people under quarantine at 11 hotels within the Klang enhanced MCO area.
The Teratai cluster linked to the Top Glove factories in Klang has since emerged as the largest Covid-19 cluster so far with 5,083 active cases as of yesterday.
Meanwhile, Yazid said the Selangor police have received 54,711 applications for interstate travel from Nov 26 until yesterday.
He said 1,206 were rejected, largely on grounds of travelling for holidays.
A total of 3,141 vehicles were also ordered to turn back at various roadblocks for not having the authorisation to travel.
Selangor has been under a conditional MCO since Oct 14 and the government is expected to decide tomorrow whether to lift or further extend the order. - Mkini
