KLUANG: Police have launched a manhunt after a 38-year-old detainee escaped from a Transit Detention Centre (PTP) at the Padang Hijau National Service Training Programme (PLKN) camp here Friday (March 20).
Kluang OCPD Asst Comm Low Hang Sen said the suspected runaway was undergoing a 14-day Covid-19 safety screening at the PTP before being sent to the Ulu Choh prison.
"The police received a call at about 6.50pm on Friday (March 19) from the prison warden that four local detainees had attempted to escape custody.
"The wardens also noted that three convicts have been rearrested while one is still at large," he said in a statement Saturday (March 20).
He added that the men were earlier charged in court and were supposed to have been sent to the Ulu Choh prison after undergoing the 14-day safety screening.
"The police have launched 'Op Tutup' at every entry and exit point around the Kluang district to track down the escapee.
"All officers in the field have also been notified about the incident," he said, adding that K9 police dogs are also on the hunt for the suspect.
He said that the case was being investigated under Section 223/224 of the Penal Code.
ACP Low urged those with information about the suspect to assist the police by going to the nearest police station or contacting the Kluang police headquarters hotline at 07-776 6822. - Star
