Cops to quiz 11 Undi18 protest organisers, participants tomorrow

Police will summon at least 11 organisers and participants of the Undi18 protest to Dang Wangi district police headquarters tomorrow.

The Undi18 protest was held outside the Parliament building in Kuala Lumpur on March 27.

According to a source, the 11 individuals include Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) secretary-general Amir Abdul Hadi, Simpang Renggam MP Maszlee Malik, lawyer and activist Ambiga Sreenevasan, and PKR vice-president Tian Chua.

Other names are Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh, Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad, Ketari assemblyperson Young Syefura, DAP Youth chief Howard Lee, Pakatan Harapan Youth chief Shazni Munir, PSM central committee member Sharan Raj, and PSM youth committee member SK Arveent.

It is learnt that all of them received a call from the police to come to the police station tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Dang Wangi police chief Mohamad Zainal Abdullah confirmed with Malaysiakini that the police will quiz several rally participants tomorrow.

"Yes, they will come tomorrow," he said when contacted.

Zainal added that the rally organiser did not submit a notice to the police prior to holding the protest.

On March 27, Zainal was also seen observing the crowd of over 100 rally participants.

He had said that the participants will also be probed under Regulation 11, Prevention and Control Of Infectious Disease (Measures in Local Infected Areas) (Conditional Movement Control Order) (No 4) 2021.

Led by Amir, the protest, which saw the participants marching from Padang Merbok to a few hundred metres away from the Parliament's main gates, centred on demanding the government to honour its promise to implement the 18-years-old voting age as well as automatic voter registration by July.

The protest followed the announcement by the Election Commission that the process would be delayed until September next year.

The 15th general election is widely speculated to be called in August this year when the emergency proclamation expires. - Mkini
