Remove illegal modifications or face action, JPJ tells motorcyclists

JPJ says exhaust pipes must follow specifications under the law or the owner will not be allowed to use the bike.

PETALING JAYA: Motorcyclists who have illegally modified their bikes to amplify the sound of the exhaust pipes will not be allowed to ride them until it is repaired, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) said today.

In a statement, the department added that the owner will be given seven days to repair or change the exhaust pipes according to the specifications allowed under the law.

“The bike will then be inspected again by JPJ to see if is road-worthy,” the department said.

According to the JPJ, anyone found to have modified their vehicle illegally could be instantly summoned up to RM300. However, if the case goes to court, then the offending party can be fined a maximum of RM2,000 or face a jail term of up to a maximum of six months.

For now, JPJ said it will take a softer approach by educating the public on the issue.

A crackdown by the police, JPJ and the Environment Department on motorcycles was held in January after receiving public complaints.

Police had said exhaust pipes must be maintained well at all times and no illegal modification was allowed as the noise creates a nuisance. - FMT
