Wee lodges report over ‘racist’ video on drink driving laws

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic) has lodged a police report over a three-minute video that accuses the Transport Ministry of amending laws on drink driving to target Indians.

The Transport Minister confirmed that his private secretary Ong Cher Chin had lodged a report at the Putrajaya police station at 11.35am yesterday with regards to lies linked to amendments to the Road Transport Act that went viral in a video via WhatsApp.

“It is hoped that PDRM (police) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission will investigate this matter and take stern action against those behind the video which spreads false news containing racial slants that could disrupt harmony in the country, ”

Dr Wee, who is MCA president, said in a Facebook post accompanied by a photograph of Ong’s police report.

In his report, Ong said he came to know of the matter at 8am yesterday after reading a post by former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak on his Facebook page.

“The video is clearly a lie and racist, aimed at tarnishing the reputation of the Transport Ministry, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong and also MCA, ” Ong added.

He noted that it was generally known that the Road Transport (Amendment) Act 2020, which carries heavier penalties for traffic offences particularly related to Sections 41 to 45, came into effect on Oct 23 last year.

He added that the amendments were for stiffer penalties for those who caused death due to recklessness or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Ong urged the police to investigate the matter thoroughly and take action against those responsible for the video which, he said, had the propensity to disrupt national harmony.

In an earlier post yesterday,

Dr Wee thanked Najib after the latter clarified the issue on Facebook.

On Wednesday, Najib lambasted the video as propaganda by some to incite hatred against MCA and Barisan Nasional.

“The video alleged that the punishment for drunk drivers was deliberately increased last year to prey on Indians because the punishment for drivers under the influence of drugs was not included.

“This is false. The Act was amended not only to increase the punishment for drunk drivers but the same heavy punishment is also imposed for those who drive under the influence of drugs, ” Najib said. - Star
