Xavier refuses to comment on defection

Kuala Langat MP Dr Xavier Jayakumar refused to comment on the allegations that he left PKR after being pressured by the MACC.

Xavier (above) was at the Covid-19 national immunisation programme to receive the first dose of the vaccine with several other frontliners at the sports complex in Banting, Selangor today.

The former PKR deputy president only replied briefly to reporters who asked for his comment following his defection from PKR to support the Perikatan Nasional government.

"I stick to my statement which I gave before. That's all," he said.

On a separate matter, Xavier advised the public, notably the Kuala Langat folk, to get the Covid-19 vaccine jab when the time comes.

"Don't worry, the inoculation is healthy and safe. I didn't even feel the needle in my arm," he said.

On Saturday, Xavier stated that he left PKR - which he joined in 1998 - because he was too frustrated with the party.

The utmost priority, he had said, was to support the government's effort to curb the Covid-19 outbreak, creating new jobs and reviving the economy.

Before Xavier, PKR lawmakers Larry Sng (Julau) and Steven Choong (Tebrau) also abandoned the party in late February.

PKR's Sungai Buloh MP Sivarasa Rasiah.

Sungai Buloh MP Sivarasa Rasiah claimed that Xavier's action was due to pressure after being "selectively investigated" by the MACC.

This came after the MACC arrested Perak PKR deputy chief MA Thinagaran whom Xavier claimed to be a family friend.

MACC had reportedly arrested Xavier's political secretary, aide, and several other individuals in connection with a project in Perak under the Pakatan Harapan administration.

The MACC previously denied Harapan’s allegation that it was being used as a “political weapon” in relation to defections.

Meanwhile, PAS' Sijangkang assemblyperson Ahmad Yunus Hairi expressed his happiness with Xavier's defection.

"(His action) is good news to stabilise the government. We want a stable government," he said. - Mkini
