Zaid: Future of Malays in hands of women, not 'politically polygamous' men

The Umno annual general assembly has convinced Zaid Ibrahim that the future of the Malay race rests with its fairer sex.

The men, he added, are fixated on polygamous relationships, which the former law minister described as the "tragedy of Malay politics".

“Polygamy is when men use women.

“When a political alliance is predicated on using one another and not to buttress public good, what you get is whining about betrayal which is of no interest to the public,” he told Malaysiakini.

The former Umno lawmaker said the party should have used the assembly to disclose how it would better deal with the Covid-19 pandemic and improve the nation's economy instead.

“They only needed one paragraph to say enough of Bersatu and PAS.

“The future of the Malays must now rest with Malay women. The men are only fixated on polygamous relationships,” he added.

According to Zaid, what transpired at the assembly also laid to rest the chest-thumping during the Sheraton Move that the Umno-Bersatu-PAS alliance was for race and religion.

"The assembly demonstrated that politicians crave power and personal survival.

“Everything else is secondary,” he added.

Last February, Umno-BN and PAS, who are members of the Muafakat Nasional alliance, joined hands with Bersatu and a group of PKR defectors to topple the Pakatan Harapan federal government.

Together with the support of Sarawak-based parties, the Perikatan Nasional administration was formed under the leadership of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

However, ties soon turned sour with Umno accusing Bersatu, which comprises a large number of lawmakers from Umno who jumped ship, of treating it in an unfair manner.

In his speech at the assembly, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is facing a slew of corruption charges, said he would lead BN on a solo quest for power in the next general election.

He also warned party dissidents to abide by the decision to sever ties with Bersatu for the coming national polls.

This was a clear message to a faction within Umno which is loyal to Muhyiddin.

Responding to this, Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah urged party members serving in the cabinet to resign.

Similarly, Kelantan Umno delegate Wan Mohamed Rasman Hassan urged Umno leaders who hold ministerial and GLC positions to step down.

Meanwhile, PAS, which has found itself in a political conundrum due to Umno's stand, said it will continue defending the unity of the ummah (Muslims) in Malaysia. - Mkini
