TANAH MERAH: Two lorry drivers were detained for smuggling 5.4 metric tonnes of cooking oil yesterday.
The two were heading to the Kelantan-Thailand border when they were stopped by the authorities in Kampung Ayer Batu near Panglima Bayu.
The operation was jointly being carried out between the state Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry and Pengkalan Kubor Marine police.
State ministry enforcement chief Azanizam Affendi Juri said the two lorries were heading to premises located along the border when they were detained at 6pm.
"Upon checking their vehicles, enforcement officers found 5.4 metric tonnes of cooking oil worth more than RM13,000. They then arrested the two locals who had been hired to transport the items to the premises.
"The two men were heading to premises that had been used by smugglers as a transit point to store Malaysian subsidised cooking oil before being sent across the border," he said in a statement.
He added initial investigation showed that the lorry drivers received payments of RM1.50 per kilogramme of the cooking oil.
The two, in their 50s, were being held for further investigation. - NST
