Army hospital to the rescue with car park designed as hospital ward

News that a hospital car park is now a Covid-19 ward may fill some with dread but in fact, the Tuanku Mizan Military Hospital's covered parking area was designed with this in mind.

The hospital's car park in Wangsa Maju, Kuala Lumpur was converted into a disaster management zone (DMZ) at short notice on July 8 and started receiving severely ill patients today.

Army General Affendi Buang said the parking lot was designed in anticipation of chemical or biological disasters.

As such, the car park area of the twelve-year-old hospital is equipped with electricity plugs, a medical gas supply system, vacuum ports and other medical requirements, he said.

He said the car park's DMZ now had 50 beds and was under the supervision of hospital director Brigadier-General Dr Osman Abdul Rahman and Lieutenant Colonel Dr Mohamad Azlan Arrifin as DMZ commander.

Yesterday, Health Minister Dr Adham Baba said the hospital would begin to take in Covid-19 patients to ease the load of Klang Valley public hospitals which are struggling to cope with the influx of cases in the region.

The armed forces are also setting up a field hospital at the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital (HTAR) in Klang after the hospital was forced to place some patients on canvas beds outside its emergency department for lack of space.

Malaysia recorded 9,180 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours up to noon today, the highest ever.

Selangor hit a record high with 4,400 cases despite most of the state currently under an enhanced movement control order.

Overall, cases in the Klang Valley account for 61.9 percent (5,687 cases) of the national tally. - Mkini
