PETALING JAYA: The number of Covid-19 active cases could reach 1.49 million by the end of September if the trend of infection continues, according to former prime minister Najib Razak.
In a Facebook post, he said the number of active cases in June stood at 62,844 and it almost tripled within a month to 179,179 cases on July 29.
He said if the trend of infection continued, more than 500,000 cases could be recorded in August and more than a million in September.
“What is the maximum number of active cases before the government decides to change its approach to fighting Covid-19?
“What will be the new death rate in the coming months if the upward trend of active cases continues?” he asked.
Recently, health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah predicted Covid-19 transmissions would peak in mid-September, with 24,000 cases a day.
Najib criticised the government for its lack of effort in combating the virus despite the prediction.
“Why does the government predict that Covid-19 cases will rise to 24,000 (a day) in September without implementing intervention measures when September is still a month away?”
The health ministry reported 16,840 Covid-19 cases and 134 deaths over the past 24 hours.
Infections have breached the 17,000 mark over the past two days. - FMT
