Police probe Top Glove, bar workers from leaving eight hotels

Police are investigating Top Glove for allegedly moving 1,606 of its workers out of their dormitories in Petaling Jaya to eight hotels prior to the imposition of an enhanced movement control order (MCO) there.

At a press conference today, Selangor police chief Arjunaidi Mohamed said police have identified the eight hotels which Top Glove allegedly used as transit accommodations for their migrant workers.

He said the police have barred the workers from leaving these hotels.

"A total of 1,606 workers were taken to eight hotels from their hostels at Weslite in Bandar Sunway, Petaling Jaya prior to the implementation of the targeted MCO.

"We have opened an investigation (paper) under Section 270 of the Penal Code over their action," Arjunaidi added.

The provision, which deals with negligence that may spread life-threatening diseases, carries a jail term of two years or a fine.

"We are ensuring that those who are staying at the hotels are not transferred out. All 1,606 workers have been screened (for Covid-19) and we are awaiting the results," he said.

He also confirmed that the Health Ministry and local authorities had instructed Top Glove to cease operations with immediate effect.

Previously, a woman, via a viral video, had claimed that the increase in Covid-19 cases in Selangor was due to a glove factory with migrant workers being moved to Klang hotels from their hostels in Petaling Jaya.

Both Klang and Petaling Jaya are among districts placed under an enhanced MCO from July 3.

In response to Arjunaidi's remarks, Top Glove said that it was cooperating with the authorities on the matter.

"Top Glove assures its stakeholders that we are committed to ensuring the safety of our workforce and the communities we operate in," it added. - Mkini
