Punish fake vaccine peddlers

Officers in charge of vaccination centres should be required to provide proof that there was no scam at their centre. - NSTP file pic

LETTERS: I refer to the New Straits Times report dated July 21 quoting the health minister as saying that those who were deliberately not injected with the Covid-19 vaccine will be given new inoculation appointments soon.

The revelation of fake Covid-19 jabs has opened a Pandora's box. Questions are being asked about the extent of this malpractice, the market for the stolen shots and the modus operandi of those involved.

But the greatest concern is about the millions of people who have been vaccinated but who now have reason to doubt whether or not they have been scammed.

This question will be foremost in the minds of those who have ostensibly received their jabs but have had no side effects afterward.

When many others have had some symptoms, albeit mild, the rest who had no symptoms will now doubt whether or not they were injected with the real stuff, granted having no side effects after vaccination is also normal.

How can they be sure? How can they be assuaged?

It is not enough to suggest to those who have proof that they have received fake shots to get themselves vaccinated again. In the first place, how would they know they were not injected with the real vaccine?

A vast majority of people who waited patiently for their turn, queued up at vaccination centres and finally got their jabs may now be worried that they may not have been given the genuine stuff.

Most people were not shown the syringe before and after the vaccination, nor were they told to be vigilant against incompetent or false vaccinations. Many are even afraid to look at a needle before or after a jab.

They need to know now what they should do. They would like to know the full extent of this scam, especially which vaccination centres have been involved.

There are so many questions that need urgent and full answers. Investigations must be conducted at all centres and the officers in charge must be required to provide proof that there was no scam at their centre.

If answers are not forthcoming, will all the meticulously planned and executed strategies of the Health Ministry and those entrusted to handle this pandemic come to naught?

If answers are not forthcoming, public confidence in the vaccination process and, indeed, in all subsequent government plans and strategies will be severely tested.

The government must show that it will not compromise on the need for honesty and integrity among staff employed to provide public service.

What has happened is totally unacceptable by any standards. The miscreants must be brought to justice quickly to restore a semblance of trust to the entire process of handling this dreaded pandemic.

This is a serious matter that needs the attention of the highest authorities in government.
