Rafidah for interim PM – petition launched but it’s futile

The Iron Lady of Malaysia Rafidah Aziz can, at best, be made a minister if she is appointed as a senator.

PETALING JAYA: A petition lobbying for Rafidah Aziz to be made an interim prime minister was launched today and gained over 400 signatures in a matter of hours, although it may be an exercise in futility.

According to the petition on Change.org, the country is in need of an interim administration to replace the “hopeless and incompetent” Perikatan Nasional-led government.

The petition, which was started by one Willy Lim, said the interim government will comprise a team of professionals to tackle the economic and health crisis.

The interim government, the petition read, needs a firm leader with no baggage or current political affiliation as well as a proven track record.

“The only individual for the job is Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz. We need to encourage her to assume the post.”

As at 7.40pm, it had garnered 462 signatures.

However, Article 43(2)(a) of the Federal Constitution stipulates that a prime minister must be an MP who the King feels is likely to command the confidence of the majority in the Dewan Rakyat.

Rafidah can, at best, be made a minister if she is appointed as a senator.

The former international trade and industry minister, dubbed Malaysia’s Iron lady, was appointed as senator in 1974 before resigning to contest in the general election in 1978.

As per Article 45 (3) and (3A) of the Federal Constitution, one can be senator for two continuous three-year terms or a maximum of six years.

The petition for Rafidah to be an interim prime minister comes in the wake of calls for Muhyiddin Yassin to step down from the post following Umno decision’s to retract support for him.

Umno also wants an interim prime minister to take charge in the short term. - FMT
