As political pressures mount, Umno supreme council calls special meet tomorrow

The Umno supreme council will be calling a special meeting tomorrow as political pressures mount against the administration of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

Among the topics that are set to be discussed include the palace’s rebuke of the government on July 29, said Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan.

In a twitter posting, Ahmad said the meeting will also discuss the issue of emergency ordinances as well as the postponement of the Dewan Rakyat sitting scheduled today.

The king last Thursday gave the government a royal rebuke, accusing de facto law minister Takiyuddin Hassan of misleading the Dewan Rakyat by saying that the emergency ordinances had been revoked - despite them not having received royal consent.

The Prime Minister’s Office in response defended its decisions, saying it had acted within the Federal Constitution, which also stated that the king must follow the cabinet’s advice.

Parliament was originally supposed to be in session today but has been called off due to Covid-19 cases in the vicinity.

This morning, more than one hundred opposition MPs were seen marching from Dataran Merdeka to the Parliament’s gate in protest of Parliament’s suspension. They were however met by a heavy police presence blocking their way.

The opposition MPs jointly called on Muhyiddin and his cabinet to resign.

Umno itself is believed to be experiencing internal tensions with vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob having been elevated to the deputy prime ministership while party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is pulling in the opposite direction, calling on Umno to withdraw its support for Muhyiddin and to end its cooperation with its Bersatu party, which has many Umno defectors. - Mkini
