Covid-19 (Aug 30) : 19,268 new cases and 295 deaths today, Selangor dips below 4k cases

COVID-19 | The number of new Covid-19 infections reported by the Health Ministry today was 19,268 cases.

The number of active cases are holding steady over the past four days while the number of patients requiring intensive care is trending up over the same period.

  • Active cases: 265,713
  • Patients in ICUs: 1,033
  • Intubated: 476

New cases by state:

  • Selangor (3,567)
  • Sabah (2,310)
  • Johor (2,265)
  • Kedah (2,084)
  • Sarawak (2,028)
  • Penang (1,780)
  • Kelantan (1,308)
  • Perak (1,144)
  • Pahang (788)
  • Kuala Lumpur (672)
  • Terengganu (544)
  • Malacca (395)
  • Negeri Sembilan (269)
  • Perlis (71)
  • Putrajaya (41)
  • Labuan (2)

The Klang Valley region encompassing Selangor, Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur, along with Negeri Sembilan - all regions with a relatively high vaccination rate - are continuing to see a downward trend in new daily cases.

The R-naught level for the country is currently 1.01 and has been trending down over the past month. An R-naught of less than 1.00 suggests that the spread of Covid-19 is decelerating.

However, there are still many regions outside the Klang Valley where the R-naught was more than 1.00 - Sabah (1.14), Penang (1.10), Johor (1.07), Kelantan (1.05), Kedah (1.04), Perak (1.05), Sarawak (1.24) and Perlis (1.20) - and hence seeing a rise in daily cases.

Unlike other regions with an R-naught of more than 1.00, Sarawak has a full vaccination rate of 62.9 percent of its population - higher than the national average of 44.9 percent.

Deaths

Another 295 deaths were reported by the Health Ministry today, bringing the national death toll to 16,382.

There were 53 victims who were pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Selangor reported the highest number of new deaths (81), followed by Johor (47), Sabah (42), Kedah (36), Penang (23), Kuala Lumpur (13), Perak (12), Terengganu (11), Pahang (7), Kelantan (7), Negeri Sembilan (5), Sarawak (5), Malacca (5) and Perlis (1).
