There is still hope for Malaysia, says Chong Wei in Merdeka message

Just like his fighting spirit when facing opponents in the badminton court, former national shuttler Lee Chong Wei has called on all Malaysians to never give up on the country even in times of uncertainty.

Taking to Facebook, Lee reminded Malaysians of the uniting forces around sports and food.

“Don’t just know how to criticise. Try your best to repair what is broken, and develop what is already there in our country.

“There is still hope for this country we all love.

“It’s our Malaysia, our home after all,” he said.

The three-time Olympic medalist recalled his travels abroad representing Malaysia in the quest for sporting honour.

Six years ago prior to the Rio Olympics 2016, Lee said he flew 30 hours to New York for a competition, armed with not only sporting equipment, but also a range of Malaysian food staples - Maggi instant noodles, Milo chocolate drink and Hup Seng biscuits.

After a week, Lee said he flew to Calgary, Canada, where he had a taste of Malaysian food at several local restaurants, but it was nowhere close to the real deal.

Having struggled through the semi-finals, Lee said it was a nasi lemak feast cooked by a childhood friend’s wife, who was at the time based in Calgary, that had fueled him to eventually beat Hong Kong’s Ng Ka Long in the final match.

“There is no other country with food as good as Malaysia.

“There is no other country where Malays, Chinese, Indians, Iban, Kadazan, Dusun, Melanau call each other bro, abangadikah ne, boss,” he said.

“There is no other country richer in traditions and culture.

“There is no other country that can win the Thomas Cup with different races,” he added. - Mkini
