The Registrar of Societies (ROS) has reversed its decision in declaring Umno's decision to postpone its party election invalid.
Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan confirmed receiving a letter from ROS director-general Jasri Kasim informing him of the new decision this evening.
Ahmad said this was after he and Umno lawyers submitted additional documents and statements to the ROS on Aug 9, 11 and 18 as well as explanations made by several Umno supreme council members on Aug 24.
"It was found that the decision to postpone the Umno election for 2021-2013 was done properly," he said in a statement.
As such, he said the election for all positions in the Umno supreme council, divisions and branches will be postponed to a date to be announced.
The party election must be held before Dec 29, 2022.
However, he said the annual general assembly at all levels must still proceed this year.
"A date will be announced later," he said.
Ahmad thanked the ROS for its cooperation.
The ROS had on Aug 6 declared that Umno's decision to postpone its party election by 18 months was invalid.
This was on the grounds that the party supreme council made the decision to postpone only after its term had already expired.
However, Ahmad clarified that the decision was made before the end of their term. - Mkini
