Official: Noraini stays as Wanita Umno head, Akmal new youth chief

Noraini Ahmad has successfully defended her position as Wanita Umno chief, defeating her challenger and predecessor Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.

Umno election committee chairperson Shahrir Abdul Samad said Noraini (above) garnered 112 votes out of 189 Wanita Umno divisions’ votes nationwide.

In a presser at Umno’s headquarters, Shahrir said this was based on official results received at 12pm today.

Norliza Abdul Rahim also retained her position as Wanita deputy chief after garnering 123 votes.

As for the Umno Youth chief race, Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh won the post with 122 votes.

Meanwhile, Mohd Hairi Mad Shah defeated three other contenders, including Mohd Nazifuddin – who is former premier Najib Abdul Razak’s son - for the deputy youth chief post.

"For Hairi, he got 87 votes, narrowly beating his closest rival Ikmal Hazlan (Ikmal Hisham) by three votes.

"Hairi's win was only determined at noon today after results from several divisions were received," Shahrir told reporters.

For the Puteri Umno leadership contest, Nurul Amal Fauzi, popularly known as Along, secured the wing's top post with 89 votes while Siti Sokhleha Nordin defended her position as deputy chief with 115 votes.

Meanwhile, party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s daughter Nurulhidayah was elected into the Wanita executive council.

Najib’s daughter Nooryana also managed to secure a place in the Puteri exco lineup.

Shahrir explained that the official results of the party polls were announced late as several divisions had submitted their results late.

He also said the youth elections for the Titiwangsa and Semporna divisions have been postponed.

On Saturday, a commotion broke out during the counting of the delegates’ ballot papers.

Zaharah Adnan, who chairs the Titiwangsa election committee, was reported by Free Malaysia Today as saying that the clamour was caused by the youth committee’s refusal to accept votes registered with the election committee, leading to an excess of ballots.

As for Nurulhidayah’s claims that there was an ethical violation during the election process that took place in Bagan Datuk, Shahrir said that he has yet to receive objections on the matter.
