Over 500 families evacuated in Johor floods as of this morning

Several areas across Johor have reported rising water levels and flooding following continuous heavy rain, with 25 temporary shelters in operation as of this morning.

As of 9am, the Johor Disaster Management Committee reported 2,162 individuals from 581 families evacuated in five areas - Segamat, Kluang, Kota Tinggi, Johor Bahru, and Kulai - with more expected to follow.

Segamat remains to be the worst-hit so far with 209 families and 746 individuals evacuated, with reports of two major roads connecting surrounding areas including Chaah, Tenang, Yong Peng, and Labis being cut off due to rising water levels.

According to state data, Jalan Bekok and Jalan Kampung Tenang are closed to all vehicles.

The Johor Fire and Rescue Department reported that flood operations from the Labis Fire Department were subsequently taken over by teams from Yong Peng and Chaah.

Similarly, the Labis district police station was also seen to be in knee-deep flood water.

In Kota Tinggi, the Taman Aman housing area reported rising water levels last night.

Earlier this morning, Johor Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi was on the ground overseeing relief efforts at Bandar Dato Onn, Johor Bahru.

Yesterday, the Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID)published a notice to get ready for flash floods, based on rain forecasts by the Malaysian Meteorological Department, Southeastern Asia-Oceania Flash Flood Guidance System, and DID’s flood forecast model. - Mkini
