PETALING JAYA: A group representing p-hailing riders has called for government intervention following Grab’s move to revamp its earnings framework, describing it as hastily done and without proper engagement with riders.
In a statement, Persatuan Perpaduan Rakan Penghantar Malaysia urged Grab to immediately restore the previous earnings framework, saying the new rates were very low and its calculations unclear.
“We call on the government to take action and intervene in this issue concerning p-hailing riders,” it said, adding that Putrajaya must take short-term measures to resolve the problem.
The group claimed that Grab’s action disregarded a previous discussion between riders, p-hailing operators, the human resources ministry, the transport ministry, the communications ministry and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for a revision of rates.
“In our view, as long as there is no specific law enacted by the government for the gig economy, p-hailing-related issues will persist,” it added.
The group also urged the government to expedite the establishment of a gig economy regulatory body to safeguard the welfare of gig workers, especially those involved in p-hailing.
Yesterday, Grab defended its revamped delivery fee and bonus framework amid calls for riders to boycott the ride-hailing and food delivery company.
Grab said the revamped earnings framework, which came into effect yesterday, “benefits our most active delivery partners”.
It also said it would ensure that bookings which require more time and effort are “more fairly compensated”.
Under the revamped framework, base fares have been reduced while incentives have been increased for peak-hour deliveries, distant pick-ups and extended wait times to pick up deliveries.
Some Grab riders have opposed the new framework and urged others to boycott the company.
