Senior citizen charged with mowing down 3 bikes in Penang

Ex-police clerk Tan Leuk Ley appearing at the magistrates’ court in George Town, Penang, to answer charges of reckless and dangerous driving.

GEORGE TOWN: A retired police clerk has pleaded not guilty to charges of mowing down three motorcycles near Universiti Sains Malaysia’s Bukit Gambir gate here last November.

Tan Leuk Ley, 76, was charged with three counts of reckless and dangerous driving under Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987. The section provides for a maximum jail time of five years, a fine of up to RM15,000, and a two-year disqualification from driving.

She is accused of crashing her Perodua Myvi into the three motorcycles at Jalan Bukit Gambir on Nov 27, 2023.

According to the charge sheet, Afiq Roszani, 23; Nor Ezrie Ahamad, 40; Irfan Hakim Nor Ezrie, 15; Syamil Zulkarnain, 22; and Kristina Abdullah, 22, were riding the bikes at the time of the accident.

Magistrate Siti Nurul Suhaila Baharin set RM15,000 bail with one surety.

Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Nurul Atikah Asharaf Ali asked the court to set bail of RM10,000 for each of the three charges.

Tan’s lawyer Dev Kumaraendran asked for a lower bail since she had cooperated with the police and was not a flight risk.

Dev said his client was a police administration clerk who served the force for 30 years at its Penang headquarters. He said she retired after suffering from tinnitus, a complication in her ears.

The case has been set for mention on March 8. - FMT
