KOTA BHARU: Umno will decide on its candidate for the Nenggiri state by-election next week, party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.
He said a shortlist of prospective candidates had been prepared by Gua Musang Umno division chief Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah. “We will present this to the political bureau for final approval next week,” he told reporters after opening the Jeli Umno Youth annual meeting today.
Zahid said Umno was more attentive to current political dynamics and voters’ concerns following its recent electoral setbacks in Kelantan, including Nenggiri itself, at the last state assembly elections.
The Nenggiri seat was declared vacant by state assembly speaker Amar Abdullah on June 19 after he was informed that assemblyman Azizi Abu Naim had ceased to be a member of Bersatu.
Candidates will be nominated on Aug 3, and polling will take place on Aug 17, with early voting on Aug 13.
Zahid said he would visit every state to open division meetings to boost the spirits of grassroot members. “We all need to work together to recapture the parliamentary and state seats that fell into opposition hands,” he added. - FMT
