Kedah floods continue after a week, number of evacuees tops 8,000

PETALING JAYA
Floodwaters in Kedah have yet to recede after a week, with the number of evacuees rising to more than 8,000 as of this morning.

As of 8am, 8,017 people from 2,594 families had been relocated to 37 temporary shelters in the state, Berita Harian reported.

This was higher than the 7,961 from 2,577 families at 11pm yesterday, according to the welfare department’s disaster information portal.

The affected districts are Kota Setar, Pendang, Pokok Sena, Kubang Pasu and Bandar Baharu, with Kota Setar the worst-hit after seeing 5,390 residents evacuated from their homes.

This is followed by Pendang (1,604), Kubang Pasu (671), Pokok Sena (233), and Bandar Baharu (119).

Putrajaya has announced a RM13 million allocation to repair the damage caused by the floods in Kedah. Each affected household will also receive RM1,000 from the state government. - FMT
