MAHKOTA BY-ELECTION | As the clock ticks down for the Mahkota by-election in Johor, PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari is trying to capitalise on the rift between DAP vice-chairperson Teresa Kok and Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh.
This was after Kok made it clear she would not share any stage with the firebrand politician to campaign for BN’s candidate Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah.
However, Fadhli interpreted this as a “total rejection” of Umno and a “declaration of war”.
“Kok should not have done this. The party which is contesting in Mahkota is Umno. The candidate is from Umno Youth.
“If Kok refuses to share the stage with the Umno Youth chief, it means she has rejected Umno as a whole. This is not appropriate,” he said on Facebook.
Adding more fuel to the fire, Fadhli said he is confident that Umno Youth “would not allow this person to declare war against their boss”.
“Unless the Umno Youth chief’s stand does not have the support from within Umno itself,” he added.
Fadhli apologised for sharing his two cents on this topic but pointed out that the issue was reported in the media.
“If you don’t want the public to offer their views, (discuss) in meetings quietly,” he added.
Earlier, Kok said her lawyer had advised her against sharing the stage with Akmal as it could complicate her planned legal action against the Umno Youth chief.
“It is common knowledge that my lawyer has issued a letter of demand as a prelude to a potential lawsuit against Akmal. His legal counsel has been in touch with mine regarding this matter.
“I wish to state that l will not be sharing any ceramah stage with Akmal. Furthermore, I believe this decision is in the best interest of the unity government’s election campaign,” the Seputeh MP told Malaysiakini.
Legal notice
On Sept 11, Kok sent a legal notice to Akmal seeking RM25 million in damages for calling her “Nyonya tua” (old Nyonya) and wanting to stick a non-halal logo on her forehead.
The Umno Youth chief had trained his guns on Kok for “interfering” in Islamic matters with regard to her comments on the halal certification issue.
Perikatan Nasional is hoping to leverage disgruntled Chinese voters who make up 34 percent of the electorate in Mahkota for the Sept 28 polls.
The BN candidate is in a straight fight with PN’s Haizan Jaafar.
The Mahkota by-election was called following the death of the incumbent Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, 63, on Aug 2. - Mkini
