An anti-corruption rally will be held in Kuala Lumpur on Jan 25, organised by Sekretariat Rakyat Benci Rasuah.
In a statement endorsed by 50 organisations and 38 individuals, the secretariat demanded swift action against all politicians involved in corruption cases, transparent probes into all corruption allegations, and for all political leaders to affirm commitment towards ending corruption.
“Is the government blind or deaf to the people’s voices? Or is the opposition even more foolish by using corruption as mere political capital?
“We are taking to the streets because that is the only way the people’s voices can be heard.
“Recently, the prime minister himself advised that the youth should not be busy defending corrupt leaders. So, here we take up the call,” it said.
The rally will take place at 2.30pm in front of Sogo and participants will march to Dataran Merdeka.
Poor handling
The secretariat condemned both the government and the opposition for its handling of major corruption issues.
Pointing to Malaysiakini’s recent exposé of the scandal in Sabah involving several state assemblypersons, it expressed disappointment in how the matter has been swept under the carpet.

“The Madani government, which supposedly carries the slogan of justice, is now also struggling with issues pertaining to integrity.
“Regrettably, the opposition has also failed to offer a better alternative.
“In both coalitions, integrity seems to be dead,” it said.
It said the people have been disappointed over “top leaders” escaping sentencing through “dubious” court decisions.
Although it did not elaborate, the KL High Court granted Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi a discharge not amounting to an acquittal of the corruption case involving millions of ringgit from Yayasan Akalbudi in 2023.
Last month, the KL High Court also discharged and acquitted Rosmah Mansor of 12 money laundering charges involving RM7 million and five charges of failing to declare her income to the Inland Revenue Board.
Organisations that endorsed the statement included Borneo Komrad, Muda, Bersih, Parti Sosialis Malaysia and Suaram.
Several university student groups also endorsed it. - Mkini
