Believing his initiative brings blessings and joy to his family, So Chin Hui said his goal is to give back to society and share his fortune with others, even as operating costs rise year after year.
Since 2008, V Fortune Land Vegetarian Café has been offering affordable meals consisting of rice with three dishes for just RM2. A recent visit by FMT revealed long queues of customers lining up as early as 10am.

“Other restaurants have criticised my business, saying it lacks quality. I don’t need to explain myself to them. What matters is my customers: if my food wasn’t good, even at a low price, people wouldn’t queue like this,” So said.
He revealed that he once declined an offer from the owner of an investment company to open more branches of his affordable eatery, fearing it would stray from his mission and purpose.
To this day, So, who also owns several shoe shops, personally cooks the food to ensure the standard of meals served to his customers.
Still, it hasn’t always been easy: So said he once suffered losses so severe, he had to use funds from his shoe business to cover the restaurant’s operational costs.

“Thankfully, the number of customers has grown and now almost reaches 1,000 daily,” said the 65-year-old, who also distributes free meals every morning except on the first and 15th days of the Chinese calendar.
“I’m happy because I can help those in need. As long as I have the strength, I will continue this social service.”
Meanwhile, a customer known as Chin, 41, said he is happy to visit the restaurant daily because the low prices help him save on his daily expenses.

“Nowadays, everything is getting more expensive. I’ve seen other places offer similar meals, but they eventually raise their prices for various reasons,” said the private-sector employee.
Magret, 49, a public servant, noted how rare it is to find vegetarian food that is both affordable and offers variety, especially in the city centre.
“Even though V Fortune Land charges just RM2, the portion sizes are very satisfying,” she said. “For just RM2, I can stay full until late afternoon.”
