Anwar Ibrahim has expressed hope that newly appointed Chief Justice Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh will carry out the responsibilities entrusted to him with wisdom and integrity, in the pursuit of a fairer and more progressive Malaysia.
The prime minister, who received a courtesy call from Wan Ahmad Farid at his office yesterday, said that their meeting centred on the importance of reinforcing a judiciary grounded in independence and integrity.
The discussion also touched on strengthening public trust in the judiciary as a cornerstone of a just and equitable rule of law, said Anwar, who extended his congratulations to the new chief justice in a post on Facebook.
Wan Ahmad Farid, 62, was appointed the 17th chief justice, succeeding Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, who retired on July 2.
In his maiden speech as the chief justice yesterday, Wan Ahmad Farid pledged to safeguard the independence of the judiciary.
He also pledged his full commitment towards improving the judiciary and safeguarding its independence.
