Flag blunders: Kapar MP suggests audit on all govt agencies, schools

PARLIAMENT | An opposition MP today urged Putrajaya to launch an audit on all national flags at all government agencies and schools.

This followed a series of recent blunders involving the Jalur Gemilang, which had created public tension.

Dr Halimah Ali (PN-Kapar), in her debate speech at the Dewan Rakyat, expressed her disappointment over the incidents and urged authorities to take strong measures.

“The Malaysian flag has been properly and clearly designed; its crescent, its star all have their own places (on the flag).

“So there is no excuse for us to mistakenly fly the flag upside-down. (But) this issue has occurred repeatedly.

“(The government) should audit all its departments and agencies, including schools that are funded by the government. There has to be a strong and meaningful action,” she said when debating the 13th Malaysia Plan proposal.

Halimah, who is from PAS, also compared the flag blunders to her experience when visiting China.

She claimed that the republic did not have such a problem because they have the National Flag Law of the People’s Republic of China.

“This is a question that Kapar wants to ask - how many cases of upside-down flags in Malaysia that actions have been taken against them under Act 414 or any other relevant law?” she said, referring to the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963. - Mkini
