Part of the roof of SK Seri Perlis in Kangar was damaged after being blown away by strong winds during a thunderstorm this evening, requiring 207 students to temporarily follow a Home-Based Teaching and Learning (PDPR) session.
Perlis Education Director Rose Aza Che Arifin said the incident, which occurred around 5.20pm, affected students from Standard One (two classes, 70 students), Standard Two (two classes, 74 students), preschool (one class, 25 students), and the Integrated Special Education Programme (five classes, 38 students).
“The State Education Department (JPN) has informed the students’ guardians, and all immediate steps are being taken so that repair work can be carried out as soon as possible. We have also requested funding from the Education Ministry,” she told reporters today.
Rose said the school has also been asked to ensure that student learning is continuously monitored throughout the PDPR period so they do not fall behind.
Meanwhile, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, in a Facebook post tonight, said she has asked the Perlis JPN to provide a full report on the damage, and disaster funds will be channelled so that repair work can be implemented immediately.
“Thankfully, no students, teachers, or school staff were affected in this incident,” she said.
Meanwhile, Kangar district police chief Yusharifuddin Mohd Yusop, who confirmed the incident, also said the storm caused a car to be damaged after being hit by a part of the school roof that was blown away by the wind.
