Awang Ahmad Sah Sahari, who quit Gagasan Rakyat to contest as an independent candidate, still hopes GRS will emerge victorious in the state election.

Awang Ahmad, who is defending his seat as an independent candidate, expressed hope that Gabungan Rakyat Sabah would emerge victorious on Nov 29.
Nonetheless, he said he would back any party that forms the state government to ensure Petagas receives the appropriate development funds.
“I really hope GRS can form the government,” he told FMT after nominations at Dewan Sri Putatan this morning.
Awang Ahmad resigned from Hajiji Noor’s Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah to contest as an independent candidate in Petagas after the seat was offered to PKR.
He won the Petagas seat on a Warisan ticket by just 261 votes in 2020 before defecting to Gagasan Rakyat in February 2023.
“It is not right for me to contest independently and still hold a position in Gagasan Rakyat,” he said.
There will be a 10-cornered contest in Petagas, with Awang Ahmad hoping to fend off his younger brother, Awang Husaini Sahari, of PKR.
Awang Ahmad said he felt compelled to defend his seat after Pakatan Harapan announced that his brother was its candidate.
He maintained that the contest was nothing personal, but to state his disagreement with GRS for conceding the seat to PKR even though Petagas was not one of its strongholds.
“I was the incumbent and the people of Petagas are still with me. This is a struggle to ensure that Petagas is looked after by one of its locals,” he said. - FMT
