KOTA KINABALU: Nomination for the 17th Sabah State Election began at 9am at 25 nomination centres throughout the state on Saturday (Nov 15).
Prospective candidates will have one hour, from 9am to 10am, to submit their nomination papers before the respective returning officers (RO) announce the list of eligible candidates contesting the 73 state seats.
Candidates will then have 14 days to campaign for voter support, ending at 11.59pm on Nov 28.
The Election Commission (EC) has reminded contesting political parties and their supporters to maintain public order during today's nomination process and to avoid any form of provocation.
To ensure the smooth running of the state election, the EC has appointed 25 ROs, supported by 196 assistant ROs.
Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said police have identified 15 hotspots requiring heightened security, with particular attention on several locations around Kota Kinabalu and the east coast.
To maintain order, he said police will deploy personnel, including from the Criminal Investigation Department, as well as the Light Strike Force and the Federal Reserve Unit, where necessary.
A total of 9,300 police personnel will also be stationed across Sabah throughout the election period, including 4,300 personnel at nomination centres to manage traffic and secure administrative buildings and Istana Seri Kinabalu.
The EC has set Nov 25 for early voting and Nov 29 as polling day.
According to EC, 1,784,843 electors are eligible to cast their ballots, including 1,760,417 regular electors, 11,697 military personnel and spouses, and 12,729 police personnel and spouses.
As of 10pm on Friday (Nov 14), PKR has announced 10 candidates and DAP seven, all under the Pakatan Harapan banner. Barisan Nasional fields candidates in 45 seats, while GRS will contest 55 through its component parties.
Warisan, PPRS and Parti Impian Sabah will contest all 73 seats. Perikatan Nasional will field candidates in 41, while STAR and KDM will contest 40 each.
UPKO (25), Parti Kerjasama Anak Negeri (26), SAPP (six) and 17 independent candidates under the "Black Wave" banner will also enter the race. - Bernama
Sarawak-based Parti Aspirasi Rakyat Sarawak (Aspirasi) is trying their luck contesting in the Sabah election by fielding nine candidates.
Although the party did not win any seats in the Sarawak election in 2021, the party is vying for positions in Sabah assembly to help fight for Sabah rights as stated in the Malaysia Agreement 1963, says its president Lina Soo.
Aspirasi is contesting in Matunggong, Bandau, Kapayan, Moyong, Pantai Manis, Sindumin, Sulabayan and Bugaya.
The party has also placed a candidate in Senallang, the stronghold of Warisan president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal.
Soo said the party decided to contest in Sabah following what it believed were the aspirations of Sabahans for change.
“It is also to fight for promises that have not been delivered. The party believes the message of state rights will be among issues that will influence voters in this election, especially the young ones,” she said.
Sabah Barisan Nasional chairman and Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin is heading into a six-cornered contest in Lamag (N58), drawing one of the busiest nomination scenes in the Kinabatangan district as candidates filed their papers at Dewan Sri Lamag on Saturday (Nov 15).
Bung, who first won the newly created Lamag seat in 2020, is once again banking on the strong support he has long cultivated in the area. The Kinabatangan MP is seeking a renewed mandate in a constituency that has become one of the district’s most-watched battlegrounds this election.
His challengers reflect a mix of youth, newcomers and seasoned grassroots activists.
They are Mohd Saifulah Lokman (Warisan), 31, a Kinabatangan-born youth leader active in community outreach; Mazlin Madali (PN), 43, a former religious educator; Salahuddin @ Saalehuddin Anoi (PIS); Johainizamshah Johari (GRS–Gagasan), 39, a first-time candidate from Kota Kinabatangan; and independent contender Mohd Ismail Ayob, who filed his papers accompanied by a small group of supporters.
All four state seats in the Tuaran parliamentary constituency will see multi-cornered fights, including the one defended by caretaker Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor
Hajiji will face four others contesting for the seat which he has held since 1990.
One of his challengers is Barisan Nasional's Dr Shahnon Rizal Thaijuddin, who is a brain surgeon.
Another incumbent, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai of Gabungan Rakyat Sabah is facing an eight-cornered fight for the Kiulu seat.
Pantai Dalit will see a seven-cornered fight
Meanwhile, Tamparuli will see eleven candidates contesting the seat, including one from GRS, Warisan, Upko and an Independent.
Johan Jahid, the son of former Tamparuli assemblyman Datuk Jahid Jahim is contesting as an Independent.
A clash between Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and its partner Pakatan Harapan has shaped up in Sabah’s interior Kemabong seat in Tenom.

According to the Election Commission’s candidate numbers, Bung is listed as No. 1 (BN–Umno), followed by Johainizamshah Johari (No. 2, GRS–Gagasan), Salahuddin @ Saalehuddin Anoi (No. 3, PIS), Mohd Saifulah Lokman (No. 4, Warisan), independent Mohd Ismail Ayob (No. 5) and Mazlin Madali (No. 6, PN).
Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor is locked in a five-cornered fight for the Sulaman state seat which he has held since 1990. He is being challenged by a young doctor from Barisan Nasional, Dr Shahnon Rizal Thaijuddin and three others.
Opposition leader Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal is in a five-cornered fight in his stronghold of Senallang as of the close of nominations at 10am.
The Warisan president is being challenged by GRS's Marunda KK Ampong, Parti Impian Sabah's Mohd Lipai@Samsu Sundalu, an independent, former state minister Datuk Askalani Andul Rahim and Abdul Majid Angkulan from the Malaysia United Party.

Pantai Dalit will see a seven-cornered fight, with one candidate coming from
Barisan Nasional and another from Gabungan Rakyat Sabah.
Tuaran nomination centre returning officer Ibrahim Terki announced the official closure of the centre at 10am.
Barisan Nasional MCA's candidate Kevin Lee Sip Kim together with MCA top leaders such as deputy president Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon, secretary-general Datuk Chong Sin Woon, vice-president Datuk Dr Wee Jeck Seng and Sabah MCA liaison committee chairman Datuk Teah Hock Kuin as he filed his nomination for the Tanjong Kapor state seat at the Dewan Tun Mustapha nomination centre in Kudat.
Sabaria @ Sabariah Aziz, 64, (centre) and her daughters as proposer and seconder. This former reporter for Sabah Times and TV3 is contesting as an independent for Kapayan. She has been active in politics for some time but decided this year to take the leap to contest. She is a businesswoman who was previously a Barisan Nasional member.

Upko has one candidate in the N57 Kuamut seat, Mohina Sidom, who is expected to arrive at the Dewan Sri Lamag nomination centre in Kinabatangan.
Parti Kebangsaan Sabah Moyog candidate, Richard Ronald Dompok, Tan Sri Bernard Dompok’s youngest nephew. This 42-year-old has been quite active in politics since 2018, with Sabah STAR as member. Then he moved on to Parti Bangsa Malaysia in 2022, before joining Parti Kebangsaan Sabah party this year. With him is his proposer (right) and seconder for Moyog.
