Hadi's son-in-law charged with illegal assembly over Kg Sg Baru eviction

Sungai Buloh PAS chief Zaharudin Muhammad has been charged with taking part in an unlawful assembly during an eviction operation at Kampung Sungai Baru in Kuala Lumpur last September.

He was accused of joining the gathering with seven others along Jalan Datuk Abdul Malik between 10.50am and 11.14am on Sept 11, 2025, Kosmo reported.

Zaharudin, who is the son-in-law of PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him before magistrate Farah Nabihah Dan, the report added.

The charge against him was brought under Section 145 of the Penal Code, which provides for a prison sentence of up to two years, or a fine, or both.

Deputy public prosecutor Wirna Arifin had proposed a bail of RM5,000 for Zaharudin. However, his lawyer, Latheefa Koya, requested that the amount be reduced on the grounds that her client is the primary breadwinner of his family.

After hearing submissions from both sides, Farah allowed the accused to be released on a RM2,000 bail and set Feb 24 for case re-mention.

On Sept 12, Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil Marsus said that seven suspects were detained over the commotion during the Kampung Sungai Baru eviction, and that the detainees are linked to an organisation, the New Straits Times reported.

Fadil announced at a press conference that the seven suspects aged between 15 and 52 were arrested in connection with the incident that left the then Dang Wangi district police chief Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman injured.

Images of Sulizmie following the altercation showed him with blood streaking down his face from an apparent head wound.

The incident occurred when commotion broke out after several residents attempted to force their way into the operation zone. Their actions, along with several members of the public, were blocked by riot police.

This caused disgruntled residents to resort to hurling objects, including stones, at the authorities, with Sulizmie believed to have been struck by one of the projectiles.

Bernama later reported that Fadil also did not rule out the involvement of outsiders who had entered the operation site and attempted to incite unrest, and that police had detected a group of individuals who were non-residents.

The eviction operation at that time was being carried out via court order to facilitate KL City Gateway Sdn Bhd’s redevelopment of the area, which is adjacent to Kampung Baru.
