Chinese couple helping elderly Malay woman a hallmark of unity [WATCH]

KUALA LUMPUR: A video showing a Chinese man and woman assisting an elderly Malay woman down a shopping mall's moving walkway has gone viral, with netizens praising the act as a sign of national unity.

As they exited the walkway, the two strangers continued to assist her, and it was clear from the video that she had difficulty walking without a cane.

A comment on the video read: 'This is what people call One Malaysia. Thank you to this Chinese couple for helping this auntie.

Malaysia is a multiethnic country, made up of Malays, Chinese, Indians and indigenous communities, who live side by side.

Mosques, temples and churches are often located close to one another, while children of different races attend schools together and mixed marriages are common.

However, disparaging comments about different communities have occasionally given rise to communal tensions.

Netizens said the couple's act of kindness resonated strongly with the true spirit of most Malaysians, reflecting a culture of care for all citizens regardless of race, religion or creed.

In the comments, users hailed the act as a sign of national unity, saying Malaysians are not inherently racist but are divided by racialised political narratives.

"Whoever lives under a rock without socialising with other races will feel like the ethnic Indians are bad, or the Chinese are bad. The truth is we are all the same. Not all Malays are bad, not all Chinese are bad and not all Indians are bad. Remember that people are nice regardless of race and religion," Facebook user Syafiq Syazwan said.

Meanwhile, user Faizal Faiz commented that racial politics pushed by certain quarters does not reflect the true nature of Malaysians.

"The citizens down here are all good. You don't need to shout various slogans, yet politics keeps spreading hate with its slogans and actions."

Afzal Adeni Awang added: "Politicians and radical religionists separate us. Remember that!"

Such sentiment was echoed by others, with Jessie Chua saying: "This is the real Malaysia. Reject politics that use racial and religious issues to divide the people."

The video was originally posted by TikTok user @danishsyazwann yesterday and has amassed more than 197,000 views. - NST
