Sabah plans to amend its state constitution to limit the tenure of the chief minister to a maximum of two terms, Chief Minister Hajiji Noor said.
In a Bernama report, the GRS chairperson said recent developments made this possible, now that the state government holds a two-thirds majority in the state legislative assembly.
“The stability allows the state government to draft and amend the state constitution in line with current needs, including a proposal to limit the chief minister’s tenure to a maximum of two terms or 10 years,” he said in his speech at the launch of Sabah Maju Jaya 2.0 in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, today.
He said other proposed reforms include increasing the number of state cabinet members to meet growing administrative demands, as well as renaming assistant minister posts as deputy minister positions.
Several ministries, departments, agencies, and government-linked companies are also being restructured to improve service and performance, he added.

He explained that the move would boost efficiency and effectiveness, while protecting public and state interests.
Besides that, he said the state government is pursuing certification for a quality management system and an anti-bribery management system.
A quality management system refers to a framework to ensure consistent and efficient service delivery, while an anti-bribery management system is designed to prevent, detect and respond to corruption.
Lingering scrutiny
Hajiji’s remarks came amid lingering scrutiny over a massive corruption scandal involving mineral exploration licences in Sabah, exposed by businessperson Albert Tei.
Hajiji himself has been accused of receiving a bribe in the scandal, which implicated over a dozen people who were assemblypersons at the time.
MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki previously cleared Hajiji of any involvement in the scandal, but Tei and two of the accused assemblypersons have since been charged.
The scandal also engulfed former Malacca PKR chief Shamsul Iskandar Akin, who was charged with taking bribes from Tei when he was the political secretary to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. - Mkini
