IPOH: A 63-year-old woman is in critical condition after a gas cylinder exploded inside her double-storey house in Taman Kledang Emas early today.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said the incident occurred at about 3.40am.
"Initial investigations showed the explosion is believed to have been caused by the accumulation of gas inside the house," he said when contacted today.
He said police received a distress call via MERS 999 at 4.02am reporting a house fire, and a patrol team was immediately dispatched to the scene.
"Upon arrival, police found the front glass door shattered and the metal grill blown outward, indicating a strong explosion.
"The victim suffered severe burn injuries over almost her entire body," he said.
He said investigations also showed the victim's daughter had detected a strong gas smell while upstairs and alerted her mother and sister to evacuate the house.
"While attempting to leave, the victim went downstairs and tried to close the gas cylinder valve when the explosion occurred," he said.
He said the victim was rushed to Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital by her child and is currently being treated in the Intensive Care Unit.
"No other injuries were reported, and the victim's husband was not at home at the time," he said. - NST
