KUALA LUMPUR: A former aide to Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has advised him to resign as Bersatu president, saying the former prime minister's leadership is no longer appreciated by certain factions within the party and Perikatan Nasional (PN).
Datuk Dr Marzuki Mohamad said Muhyiddin has been facing consistent attacks from both within and outside the party.
In a Facebook post, Marzuki said the attacks against Muhyiddin were being "orchestrated".
He said Muhyiddin was unfairly blamed for the Perlis political crisis, which saw Bersatu take over the state leadership from Pas, despite the issue originating from an internal Pas dispute.
"Words like 'get out' or 'your time is finished' have also been uttered by Pas leaders," he said.
"Muhyiddin is an ordinary human being. He is not an angel, nor is he a religious scholar who can hide his weaknesses behind a large robe and turban," he said, adding Muhyiddin then quit as PN chairman.
Despite this, Marzuki claimed a Pas vice-president attempted to meet Muhyiddin during his holiday in London to seek an endorsement to become the next PN chairman.
Upon Muhyiddin's return, the Pagoh member of parliament received visits from the Pas spiritual leader and, later, Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang.
"Discussions were held, and decisions made harmoniously. Now they are at odds again.
"Once again, Muhyiddin is being blamed by Pas. At the same time, there are calls from within Bersatu for him to quit as president," he said.
Marzuki said he believes Pas views Muhyiddin's exit as a way to resolve their problems and allow them to take charge of PN.
Under the PN constitution, a resignation as chairman must be endorsed by the PN Supreme Council.
However, it is understood that neither Gerakan nor MIPP would accept a Pas leader as the coalition head.
Marzuki said if he were to advise Muhyiddin, he would tell him to leave.
"There is no point leading a group of people who do not know how to appreciate your leadership. In fact, they regard you as their biggest liability. Just wish them very good luck, he said." - NST
