Kamil: PKR No 2 vacancy won't affect preparations for polls; Asyraf issues LODs to defamers

• The vacancy of PKR’s deputy president post will not affect preparations ahead of upcoming elections, said Youth chief Kamil Abdul Munim.

  He said duties have been clearly divided between vice-president Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, who will be stepping in for outgoing deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar, and vice-president Amirudin Shari.

  State and branch-level leaders have issued explanations to their members, Kamil (above) added.

  “They have accepted the decision with an open heart and their focus is on strengthening and empowering the organisation,” he told a press conference at the PKR annual congress at the Melaka International Trade Centre this afternoon.

Tabung Haji

• Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki has initiated legal action against several social media users for allegedly defaming him by linking him to various Tabung Haji-related issues.

  In a Facebook post today, Asyraf said he has instructed his lawyers to issue letters of demand for a RM5 million lawsuit, with the documents to be served on those who allegedly tarnished his reputation and dignity.

  If the courts rule in his favour, the Mara chairperson said any monies awarded to him will be channelled to Yayasan Pelajaran Mara for the benefit of poor and orphaned students.

Court

• A man was sentenced to three months' jail by the Sepang Sessions Court after pleading guilty to five charges of making offensive posts against the Terengganu royalty via X.

  According to Bernama, judge Ahmad Fuad Othman handed down the sentence against Azman Hakim Hassanuddin, 35, and ordered the jail term to run from his remand date of June 24.

  

  Earlier, the prosecution informed the court that based on a report from Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta dated Aug 10, the accused, who is a mental health patient, was found fit to stand trial and capable of defending himself.

  In his appeal, the accused requested a fine instead, saying he still requires treatment and daily medication, noting that he had only been sleeping two to three hours a day due to his severe condition when he made the posts in February.

  The charges were brought under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a fine not exceeding RM500,000, or imprisonment of up to two years, or both, as well as an additional fine of RM5,000 for each day the offence persists after conviction. - Mkini
