PETALING JAYA:
Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd (MRCB) and Theta Edge Bhd have been awarded a RM3.028 billion system turnkey contract (STC) for the Penang Mutiara Line, the state’s first LRT project.

In a statement, MRT Corp said the STC comprises seven major railway systems packages, including the supply of electric trains and depot equipment, as well as the provision of power supply.

The appointment of the two companies will allow the railway system design to be carried out in parallel with the construction of viaducts and stations from Silicon Island to Komtar, it said.

The rail operator also said it was evaluating tenders for the Civil Main Contract 2 (CMC2) package, covering the extension of alignment from Komtar to Penang Sentral.

“MRT Corp is targeting the award of the contract in November 2026.”

MRT Corp said SRS Consortium continues to award various subcontract packages for station construction and related works as activities expand across the project.

“MRT Corp is pleased to announce that Bumiputera participation has now exceeded 20% of the total contract value,” it said, referring to the civil works package worth more than RM8 billion.

It was previously reported that the Mutiara Line LRT project was on track for its targeted commencement of operations in 2031.

A total of 22 stations will be built, including one at Penang Sentral in Butterworth, which will be connected to Macallum Street on the island via a 6km cross-strait bridge. - FMT
