KOTA KINABALU: Thousands of ringgit worth of uncertified electrical appliances have been confiscated in an ongoing operation by the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS).
Last week, raids around the city screened four premises for suspect appliances.
ECoS said in a statement on Tuesday (Sept 22) that its officials and Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (Sirim) personnel found various items including lamps, cables, electric kettles, irons and gas stoves without certification.
It said that under Article 107 of the Electricity Supply Regulations 2024, controlled and regulated electrical items must have ECoS labels and certifications.
Those flouting this law face fines of up to RM20,000 or up to two years' jail, or both, if found guilty.
ECoS also said that all gas appliances, as per regulation 117 of the Gas Supply Regulations 2023, must be approved and stamped before being sold.
Failure to comply will result in the offender getting fined up to RM500,000, and additional compounds for subsequent offences after conviction, it said.
So far, the amount of the compounds and whether or not anyone would be charged have yet to be decided as investigations are ongoing, ECoS added.
It reminded all electrical and gas distributors, salespersons, importers, businesses and suppliers to abide by the law for the safety of consumers and traders alike.
It warned against the sale of uncertified appliances and items as such actions violate the law and put lives at risk. - Star
