12 politicians granted DNAAs in 19 cases since 2010

Law minister Azalina Othman Said tells MP to obtain the names of the 12 politicians and the details of the charges from the AGC.

Among the more prominent DNAA cases in recent years are (from left) Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s 47 Yayasan Akalbudi charges and former prime minister Najib Razak’s SRC money laundering case.
PETALING JAYA:
Twelve politicians were granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) in 19 criminal cases between 2010 and July this year, says law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said.

In a written parliamentary reply, Azalina said this figure was based on a review of criminal case records by the office of the chief registrar of the Federal Court.

She added that the cases were before the High Court and lower courts nationwide.

She was replying to Pang Hok Liong (PH-Labis), who asked for the number of criminal cases involving politicians and high-profile leaders that resulted in DNAAs during the period, along with the identities of those involved and their charges.

Azalina did not provide the names of the 12 politicians or the details of the charges.

She instead directed the DAP man to the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC), saying such information could be obtained directly from the AGC, which holds the relevant prosecution records.

“Criminal cases are not subject to a limitation period as civil cases are, so a person granted a DNAA can still be charged again with the same offence if the prosecution decides to do so based on the facts, evidence and developments in the case,” she said.

Azalina said MPs seeking further information on specific cases could refer the matter directly to the AGC.

Among the more prominent DNAA cases in recent years are Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s 47 Yayasan Akalbudi charges in 2023 and former prime minister Najib Razak’s SRC International Sdn Bhd money laundering case in 2025. - FMT
