MCMC warns that misusing AI to create or distribute sexual content, particularly involving children, is subject to action under the Communications and Multimedia Act.

In a statement, MCMC said the misuse of AI to create or distribute sexual content that could affect the safety, dignity and wellbeing of victims, particularly children, is subject to action under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588).
It said licensed service providers also have child protection obligations under Section 18 of the Online Safety Act 2025.
“If convicted, a fine of up to RM500,000 or imprisonment of up to two years, or both, may be imposed.
“For offences committed against children, the penalty may include imprisonment of up to five years, subject to the provisions of the law in force,” MCMC said.
The commission added that it will cooperate with several other agencies in the investigation, including the police as well as the communications, home and education ministries. - FMT
